The part you never see is the part that matters most. Here is why a properly compacted base is the difference between a paver job that lasts and one that settles.
Most paver problems do not start at the surface. They start underneath, in the base, where the corners get cut. Here is what a proper base involves and why it decides how long your driveway or patio lasts.
The base does the work
Pavers only stay flat and even if what is under them is solid. That means excavating to the right depth, laying and compacting an aggregate base in lifts, and getting the grade right so water runs off. Skip the compaction or skimp on the depth and the pavers settle, dip, and pull apart within a couple of seasons.
Edge restraint and joint sand
Two more details hold a paver surface together: edge restraint that keeps the perimeter from spreading, and polymeric sand swept into the joints that hardens to lock the pavers and block weeds and ants. Leave either out and the field starts to shift and the joints wash out in the rain.
